President
Goodluck Jonathan yesterday pledged to accelerate the pace of
development in the FCT during the commissioning of the Wuye Ultra-Modern
Market in Abuja.
He
said that the federal government will continue to accord priority to
the development of Abuja, as a city designed to showcase Nigeria to the
world.
“As
more and more people come into the territory,” he said, “we need to
keep pace with the demand for infrastructure and utilities to
accommodate them. Since inception, the programme has registered an
unprecedented increase in infrastructural projects and foreign
investments and I assure you that more efforts will be focused for
accelerated development.”
The
President also expressed hope that the market will serve as a catalyst
for economic growth and enhancement of commercial activities within the
Wuye District in particular and FCT at large.
The
market, in Wuye District, has 2,000 shops and includes warehouses, cold
rooms, clinic and banking facilities, police and fire stations, refuse
dumps, mosques and a chapel.
The President was accompanied by the first lady and described the market as a New Year's gift to market women.
