Police
on Tuesday disrupted a rally led by Dino Melaye, the Executive
Secretary of Anti Corruption Network (ACN) and former member of the
House of Representatives, who was protesting against what they described
as “impunity in Rivers State and abuse of office by the state
Commissioner of Police.”
A
group of 200 riot policemen dispersed the rally with tear gas,
resulting in a stampede and in the process, causing some of the
protesters to faint in the process.
Policemen had earlier condoned off the area around the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, where the protest was billed to hold.
However,
the protesters, in their determination to hold the rally, decided to
march from ACN’s office to the secretariat, but met an unyielding police
blockade.
ACN are demanding the removal of Joseph Mbu as the Rivers State Commissioner of Police in order to restore peace to the state.
