Questions Arise over Deaths of Two Nigerian Students in Ukraine

The two Nigerian students at the Donetsk National Technical University in Ukraine who died after being admitted into a hospital in the country might have been victims of medical negligence, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Theresa Olaoluwa Oresanya, who was in her third year studying Electrical Engineering died on Friday 10 December 2013, and Bede Olunna Ogbu, an Engineering Masters Degree student died on Wednesday, 18 December 2013.

News of their death was relayed to the Embassy by the leader of Nigerian student association in the city, who in turn informed the parents of the students.

Theresa Oresanya’s father authorized that an autopsy should be carried out on his daughter’s remains before it is sent to Nigeria for burial.

The father of Bede Olunna Ogbu refused an autopsy; his son’s corpse was air- freighted to Nigeria on 29 December 2013 for burial.

Nigerian authorities have begun an investigation into the deaths.
