The
Government has threatened to blacklist irresponsible agents charged
with organizing pilgrimages to Israel and the holy lands.
Senator
Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation
(SGF), said this after reading a report released by the Nigeria
Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC) in Abuja on Tuesday, and warned
that irresponsible agents will be removed and replaced.
“If
an agent is not able to perform creditably, that agent should not only
be suspended but should be blacklisted,” he said. “Any agent who shows
no sign of capacity or competence should not be tolerated at the expense
of the pilgrims.”
Anyim
stated that last year’s pilgrimage report showed that no pilgrim
absconded whilst abroad, and urged the commission to maintain that
record.
He
also advised pilgrims to return with the group and to refrain from
using the trip as an opportunity to go shopping or engage in any other
activity that is not related to prayers and religious duty.
“The event is mainly for prayers,” he said.
The
Chairman of the commission, the Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, commended the
Government for signing a bilateral air services agreement with Israel
during last year’s pilgrimage.
